De manier waarop deze toetsen worden ingezet, heeft geleid tot een eenzijdige toetscultuur waarin toetsresultaten niet worden benut om leerlingen vooruit te helpen, maar eerder om scholen af te rekenen. Onder leerlingen is de kansenongelijkheid daardoor gegroeid. Een veelbelovend geaccrediteerd alternatief is gelukkig voorhanden.

In 1989 promoveert Hacquebord met een proefschrift naar het tekstbegrip van brugklasleerlingen in het voortgezet onderwijs. Omdat ze geen goede toets kon vinden voor het meten van die leesvaardigheid ontwikkelt ze zelf een toets. Die toets, aangevuld met de kennis die ze opdoet als onderzoeker en hoofddocent Taalonderwijskunde aan de Universiteit van Groningen, vormt jaren later de basis voor een compleet leerlingvolgsysteem voor taal én rekenen dat Diataal BV nu aanbiedt aan scholen voor basis- en voortgezet onderwijs. De adaptieve, digitale volgtoetsen van Diataal meten niet alleen de lees- en rekenvaardigheid van de leerlingen, maar bieden een vervolg in aansluiting op de toets.. Hacquebord legt uit: “De toetsen die wij leveren passen zich automatisch aan het niveau van de kinderen aan. Daardoor krijg je een goede meting van het huidige niveau en kan de leerling verder oefenen op het volgende niveau. Bij de volgmeting blijkt dan of vooruitgang is geboekt. Wij geven perspectief, door niet alleen een uitslag van de toets te leveren, maar ook een pakket materiaal aan te bieden dat past bij het niveau van dat kind en een treetje hoger.”Een volwaardig alternatief voor de CitoHet grote voordeel van dit nieuwe toetssysteem is dat er ingespeeld kan worden op de wensen en benodigdheden van de leerling en de leraar, die ermee werken in de klas. Met aansluitend het oefenprogramma Diaplus, dat in onderzoek zeer effectief is gebleken. Maar ook voor schoolleiders is dit wetenschappelijk verantwoorde, digitale systeem een groot voordeel. Hacquebord: “In een digitale omgeving kun je enorm veel informatie beschikbaar stellen, en ook op benchmarkniveau verschillende uitsnedes maken van de resultaten en zelf rapportages genereren en analyseren.” “Wij concentreren ons op de basisvaardigheden op het gebied van taal en rekenen. Voor deze vaardigheden zijn referentieniveaus vastgesteld waaraan onze toetsen zijn gevalideerd. De basisvaardigheden moeten op niveau zijn, zodat elke burger in Nederland kan participeren.”, vertelt Hacquebord. “Dat wat te ‘stampen’ is, zoals spelling, gaat op dit moment heel goed. Maar dat wat meer vraagt van leerkrachten, een didactiek van hogere orde, daar is écht ondersteuning nodig.” De producten en diensten van Diataal BV zijn bedoeld om deze ondersteuning te bieden.
