Ouders met een hoog inkomen of hoog opleidingsniveau ondersteunen hun kinderen thuis doorgaans meer dan ouders met weinig inkomen of opleiding. Dit geldt zowel in het basisonderwijs als in het voortgezet onderwijs. Bazalt Groep, bestaande uit de onderwijsadviesbureaus Bazalt, HCO en RPCZ, biedt met Expeditie Kansrijk! een traject aan om de kansen gelijker te maken. “Wij stimuleren leraren om kansarme leerlingen hun passie en talenten te helpen ontdekken en ontplooien,“ zeggen bestuurder Annemarie Kaptein en onderwijsadviseur Tamara Kamman.

Kaptein: “Kansenongelijkheid is een thema dat al lang op de politieke agenda staat. Door corona zijn ongelijkheid en armoede nog flink toegenomen, dat is goed merkbaar in het onderwijs. Denk maar aan de ongelijke mogelijkheden die kinderen hebben om van huis uit online te leren. We willen leraren handvaten bieden om de gelijkheid van kansen onder hun leerlingen te vergroten, ondanks de grote werkdruk die al op scholen heerst.”
Wat willen jullie met het programma bereiken?
Kamman: “Met name bewustwording van de leraren. Het programma is gericht op wat een school kan doen en welk verschil een leraar kan maken in de klas. We baseren ons op onderzoek van Eric Jensen, die in de VS de situatie onderzocht van kinderen die opgroeien in economische en sociale armoede, onder constante stress. Deze kinderen reageren vaak afwijkend, wat stigmatisering in de hand werkt. De leraar kan daar met de juiste mindset op inspelen. Door persoonlijke, sterke en waardevolle relaties met ze aan te gaan, kunnen zij zich nog heel positief ontwikkelen. De leraar kan rolmodel worden door zichzelf te laten zien als mens van vlees en bloed, met eigen dilemma’s en problemen. Het gaat erom de afstand met zijn leerlingen te verkleinen.”
Kaptein: “Het gaat er uiteindelijk om dat je als leraar beseft dat je invloed hebt op het zelfvertrouwen van kinderen als je uitgaat van kansen en mogelijkheden in plaats van beperkingen. Je wilt je lessen zodanig verrijken dat er een leercultuur ontstaat waar alle kinderen er zoveel mogelijk baat bij hebben, en dat is niet altijd even gemakkelijk. Daarin kunnen wij goed helpen.”
Hoe brengen jullie Expeditie Kansrijk! in de praktijk?
Kamman: “We geven leraren en ook leidinggevenden inzicht in de mindsets die een rol spelen bij het contact met verschillende leerlingen. Samen met de school beslissen we dan over trainingen, coaching on the job en andere mogelijke activiteiten, toegespitst op de wensen van de school en de specifieke problematiek die daar heerst. We vertalen de succesvolle aanpak van Jensen naar de Nederlandse situatie.“
